SUDDEN SHUTTERS
San Antonio sandwich shop presses pause after first anniversary

Focaccia Mia is taking a break after a year in business.
As San Antonio’s culinary scene continues to struggle, Italian sandwich shop Focaccia Mia is taking a breather. The Brooks-area restaurant had just celebrated its first anniversary at 2622 Goliad Rd. before announcing its immediate shutter via a Facebook post.
The business did not give a reason for the closure but did share that it wasn’t a “forever goodbye.” The decision did not appear to interrupt operations at sibling restaurant La Unica Cocina Mexicana, which shares space with Focaccia Mia.
“With a broken heart, but at the same time grateful for all your support over the past year, for reasons beyond our control, we have decided to temporarily close,” Focaccia Mia wrote.
Chef Miguel Cortez opened the concept in May 2024, boasting a menu of artisanal pizzas and pasta. The starring role went to stuffed sandwiches made with imported meats, house-made sauces, and freshly baked focaccia.
His commitment to quality may have contributed to the temporary reprieve. Ingredient costs were already squeezing out margins before the U.S. tariffs went into effect. In late 2024, Cortez’s restaurants were also hit with a string of bad luck.
In a December 2024 post to the San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group, the chef shared that he was “struggling to stay afloat” after a series of four break-ins at La Unica and sibling restaurant Birotes Tortas Ahogadas. The thefts resulted in a loss of equipment and cash.
According to the closure announcement, Focaccia Mia will reopen in the future. It gave no indication of how long it plans to stay paused.
