Luxe underground lounge digs into San Antonio's Creamery District
San Antonio’s nightlife has never been particularly known for its fanciness. Jazz clubs had a romp in the middle of the 20th Century, but the city’s bar scene has long been defined by the icehouse — working-class spots still known for their come-as-you-are attitude. Still, a new generation of entrepreneurs hopes locals will start cottoning to swankier joints.
The latest, Easy Baby Underground, opens April 18 at the Creamery District, a redeveloped Borden dairy plant at 875 E. Ashby. Only One Hospitality, the group behind all of the Creamery’s concepts and 1902 Nightclub, bills the venture as an ultra-lounge. Though the idea isn’t entirely foreign to Alamo City, most local bars bearing the designation seem to want to borrow the luxury of the term without delivering the Vegas-style experience.
According to a release, the owners took great care to live up to the name — creating a hybrid between the languor of cocktail bars and the thump of more traditional nightclubs. Guests descend a staircase from Amelia Social Lounge to find a space outfitted with cushy contemporary furniture and dimly lit alcoves sporting album covers.
The drink program is also a step above the vodka soda-slinging hubs of most area clubs. The cocktails range from retro sippers like Cosmopolitans and Espresso Martinis to modern classics like Penicillins. The vodka martini is served with a caviar bump in a snort of decadence.
A slate of daily deejays round out the experience. The music selection will span the 1970s to the 2000s, echoing the records on the walls. Local turntable wizards DJ Donnie Dee, DJ Islo, and DJ Ayer will curate the tunes during the opening weekend.
Still to come in the Creamery’s first stage are the rooftop garden bar Lunatique and an as-yet-unannounced project. Starting April 18, Easy Baby will be open Thursdays through Saturdays, 9 pm to 2 am, with “elevated” casual attire encouraged.
