San Antonio pastry chef opens new chocolate shop and classroom

Chocolatl is now selling chocolates and more treats from a brick-and-mortar space.
A new chocolate shop in San Antonio is taking chocolate to a whole new level. Chocolatl, by pastry chef Alessia Benavides, already has a strong reputation as an online shop, but now it has a brick-and-mortar shop and classroom kitchen.
The new space is located at 18720 Stone Oak Pkwy., Ste.105. Some pastry-lovers may have already stopped by for classes, as it's been open just for classes since late 2024. Now it's operating in its full capacity as a store according to posts by Benavides and a video by the heads of the San Antonio Restaurants group on Facebook.
Chocolatl refers to an Aztec drink that people today would recognize as hot chocolate.
The chef writes that visitors will find bonbons, chocolate bars, and dragées (like truffles or malt balls with a "puff" center), among other ready-to-eat treats. Photos show off shiny chocolate domes with colors painted on, fun shapes like cheesecake lips, and themed gift sets. Bonbon flavors are all over the map: churro Bailey's, guava cheesecake, raspberry rosé, pecan pie, red velvet, and many more.
San Antonians who want to get a class on their schedule won't have to wait long. In the first week of February, there have already been four classes, with many more following; there are more than 30 left this month. Benavides is more than qualified to teach, with a bachelor's degree and a baking and pastry certification from one of the most famous culinary schools in the world, Le Cordon Bleu.
Some selected in-person classes in February:
- Birthday cake on February 12
- Bi-color croissants on February 16
- Churros on February 18
- Pizza on February 20
- Beef empanadas on February 27
For those who can't make it into the store, there are also online classes covering some of the same topics as well as new ones. According to the Chocolatl website, online classes never expire. (Here's a free hint to folks looking for a sweet at-home activity for Valentine's Day.)
Chocoltatl is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 am to 7 pm (with breaks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3-5 pm), Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm. It is closed Mondays.
