San Antonio staple Cascabel Mexican Patio closes after 22 years

Cascabel Mexican Patio has closed after more than two decades in business.
One of San Antonio's best-kept dining secrets is quietly closing after 22 years. Cascabel Mexican Patio, known for its vibrant interior and traditional interior Mexican fare, announced its immediate closure via a video mournfully scored by Ozzy Osbourne's "Mama, I'm Coming Home."
"One last look at goodbye," Cascabel captioned the video. "It's been an amazing 22 years serving up great food, family recipes, awards, and countless smiling faces. Thank you to each and every one who came in and loved the food, even if we were outside of your comfort zone. Thank you for stopping in and seeing the amazing art."
Founder Reyes Quintanilla opened Cascabel at 1000 S St Mary's St. in 2003, breaking with San Antonio's Tex-Mex conventional wisdom by focusing on Central Mexican cuisine. Although the humble spot never drew the crowds of its Southtown neighbor Rosario's, it became a cult favorite with local chefs and food writers.
The restaurant quickly became well-known for offering a complimentary bowl of fideo soup before every meal, replacing San Antonio's de rigueur chips and salsa. Other dishes entered local lore, including juicy birria, pozole, cochinita pibil, and especially, the nopalitos salad.
Cascabel did not disclose the reason for the closure, but the overall business climate has not been kind to San Antonio's mom-and-pops. In February, the restaurant took to the San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group to announce an ownership shift. The unnamed poster, a child of Quintanilla, promised a revamped menu and more economic pricing.
Although longtime fans of the restaurant will no doubt be shocked by the sudden move, the restaurant is offering a bit of consolation. Cascabel says it will keep its Facebook page open, where it will continue sharing the iconic recipes that made the restaurant a classic.
