COMING ATTRACTIONS
San Antonio hooks first location of famous Nashville seafood chain

Captain D's is opening its first San Antonio restaurant on the Northwest Side.
The second-largest seafood chain in the United States is hoping San Antonio will take to its menu hook, line, and sinker. Captain D's Seafood Kitchen is opening the first of three planned Alamo City restaurants at 7531 Bandera Rd. on the Northwest Side.
The Nashville, Tennessee-based quick-service restaurant first teased its San Antonio debut in April 2025, revealing plans for three locations. At the time, local franchise owners Dave Peters, Brian Clemens, and Ruben Cardenas said they were eyeing the Lackland Air Force Base area for its first storefront but did not specify an exact address.
Whether that group is still involved in the franchise's expansion is unconfirmed. The state filing lists Ajay Gumpta as the owner.
Similar to other national seafood chains, Captain D's specializes in fried foods like catfish plates, shrimp baskets, fish sandwiches, and hush puppies. Unlike some of its rivals, it supplements the heavier fare with lighter options like blackened tilapia, grilled wild-caught salmon, and fresh sides such as green beans and steamed broccoli.
Raymond L. Danner Sr. founded the chain as Mr. D's Seafood and Hamburgers after he was not allowed to expand the territory of his Big Boy restaurant franchise. The entrepreneur changed the name in 1975 after the fried fish business took off.
Captain D’s currently operates more than 500 locations in the U.S., mostly in the Southeast. The San Antonio debut follows growth in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston areas.
The franchise owners have yet to reveal an official timeline for the Northwest Side opening. According to new Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation project details, the 2,100-square-foot unit is set to finish construction in early July, but estimated timelines are subject to change without notice.
