Bojangles roosts second San Antonio location on Southwest Side

A new Bojangles restaurant will soon roost on the Southwest Side. The cult-favorite chicken chain will open its second San Antonio location at 3003 SW Military Dr. on April 21.

The wildly popular North Carolina-based chain debuted in Alamo City in 2023, opening at 8730 Potranco Rd. At the time, the company stated it would be the first of three area storefronts — part of a Texas expansion plan that included 50 outposts in the Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio areas. Adding up its location at 1120 FM 775 in Seguin, the company has now fulfilled its promise.

Like other Bojangles locations, the San Antonio sites serve the chain's signature buttermilk biscuits topped with bacon, egg, and cheese; country ham; or sausage. The chain displays the baking process behind glass partitions, where guests can guess what "bo-berries" are. (Spoiler alert: they're blueberries.)

Although the company has not released the full menu, it will not offer bone-in chicken. When corporate heads announced the Texas expansion, they said the chain would streamline the traditional menu, focusing on best-sellers like tenders and chicken sandwiches.

Both can be paired with Southern-style sides like cole slaw, dirty rice, mac 'n' cheese, and Bo-Tatos, Bojangles' circular hashbrown-tater tot hybrids.

Ahead of the debut, the chain is hosting a special service for local police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and medics. The first 25 civilians arriving on opening day on April 21 will receive a $25 gift card and a swag bag. Everyone else has the chance to be one of 10 customers winning free breakfast for a year.

“This opening is about more than just great Bojangles chicken and biscuits – it’s a celebration ofthe first responders who serve and protect the community day in and day out,” said TerrenceThames, President of Operations at the new Bojangles location, in a release.

While the release did not divulge the hours for the new location, the chain is known for being an early riser. The Potranco Road location operated from 5:30 am-10 pm daily.

Splashy new Latin seafood restaurant to open in San Antonio's Pearl

(A)mar is bringing coastal flavors to Pearl.

Seafood at San Antonio’s Pearl will soon have a new accent. Latin-inspired restaurant Amar, stylized as (a)mar, is opening in the former home of coastal Italian eatery Allora in the Credit Human building at 403 Pearl Pkwy. in May.

The upcoming concept was founded by locals Carlos and Clarece Clavijo, who have worked in real estate investments, construction, and liquor importing. According to a release, the couple was inspired by their travels through Tulum, Oaxaca, and Latin America.

“(A)mar. is about bringing the energy of coastal Mexico and Latin America to San Antonio,” explained the Clavijos in a release. “As a group of local owners, we are especially proud to contribute to the city’s dynamic culinary culture — sharing the flavors, traditions, and spirit of Mexico and Latin America in a way that feels both authentic and deeply rooted in our community.”

The name is a sort of reverse portmanteau of the Spanish words for “to love” and “sea.” The latter informs the menu, which is filled with coastal ingredients and a beverage program focusing on Mexican wine and mezcal. The release didn’t mention any specific dishes, but we’re betting at least one ceviche will be on hand.

Whatever the initial offerings, (a)mar was built for change. Instead of hiring one person to run the kitchen, the Clavijos will draft a rotating cast from Latin America, Japan, and other coastal regions as part of a chef-in-residence program.

Much of the details about the place are still being kept under wraps, but the restaurant’s Instagram page has been teasing a few of the details (sometimes soundtracked by the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris”), including an octopus dish, lighting shades from Tulum, and what appears to be Oaxacan fiber art.
