TROPIC LIKES IT'S HOT
Summer tiki takeover drops anchor at popular Boerne bar
Bettina’s Sailing Club will run through July 19.
Boerne may be far away from white sand beaches, but that’s not keeping a local bar owner from pretending it's a tropical paradise. Tiki pop-up Bettina’s Sailing Club is returning to Camp Bar and Feed at 421 S. Main St., May 15 through July 19.
The pop-up is the latest collaboration between Camp Bar and Feed (and Bear Moon Bakery) owner Paula Hayward and Lillian Oler, founder of Assemble Cocktail Workshop. The pair have a knack for planning immersive pop-up experiences like the wintertime Frosted Jack Christmas Tavern and the Valentine's-themed Assembled Heart.
For summer, the reimagined space will sport surfboards, leis, and fishing nets. Tiki cocktails will be served in vintage glassware and mugs, bringing a little bit of Trader Vic’s to the Hill Country suburb.
The takeover is named after German writer and women's rights advocate Elizabeth "Bettina" von Arnim, the inspiration for a 19th-century Llano River commune with the same name. As far as we know, neither the trailblazer nor her devotees sipped mai tais in Hawaiian-printed petticoats, but they did live under thatched roofs.
Back in the present day, Bettina’s Sailing Club is paying homage to von Arnim’s adventurous spirit with a busy calendar that includes everything from cocktail competitions to tropical craft nights. Although the pop-up officially ends on July 19, the hosts cleared room for an encore Christmas in July party on July 25.
Bettina’s Sailing Club runs Thursdays through Sundays, 4-10 pm, with an all-day happy hour on Sunday. Let’s hope none of the cast members of Bravo’s new Boerne-based reality production show up to harsh the mellow.
