Less than a year after opening its sole San Antonio outpost, California-based hot dog restaurant Barrio Dogg has announced its closure. Although the shutter of its Southtown outpost was immediate, restaurant reps hinted at a possible return.

The eatery announced the move via a February 24 Instagram statement. The post didn’t share the factors contributing to the decision, but said the closure was unplanned.

“With a heavy heart, we must share some difficult news — Barrio Dogg has shut down operations,” the post stated. “This was not an easy decision, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it is a necessary step at this time.”

Barrio Dogg got its start in San Diego, California, first operating in 2017 out of a converted Chevrolet Impala. Co-owner and chef Pablo Rios brought the concept to San Antonio in March 2024, taking over the 620 S. Presa St. space Señor Veggie left behind when it closed in early 2023.

The concept seemed to be a natural fit for San Antonio. The decor paid homage to Chicano and lowrider culture. And the menu combined Mexican-style hotdogs with comfort food sides like fideo, smoked elotes, and calabacitas.

The Instagram statement offered some hope for the future, painting the closure as temporary. Still, there was no indication of the timeline or possible future locations.

“While this chapter is coming to a pause, this is not the end,” restaurant reps wrote. “We will be back, stronger and ready to serve you again.”
