San Antonio's mariscos craze continues with new Stone Oak seafood spot
Báltico Seafood & Grill says it is "inspired by" Báltico Fish & Beer.
Maybe it's the price of beef or the glut of traditional Tex-Mex spots in the city, but mariscos are having a moment in San Antonio. The trend will continue this fall when Báltico Seafood & Grill opens at 402 N. Loop 1604 W. in Stone Oak.
The concept appears to be an offshoot of Báltico Fish & Beer, a popular neighborhood restaurant in Torreón, Mexico, but it's unclear if the original ownership is involved. The new spot only says it was “inspired by” the Mexican restaurant, but the logos are nearly identical.
Whoever holds the keys, it appears to have been sold as a mostly turnkey operation. Not only did the restaurant take over the site of San Antonio’s only Eggspectation franchise after it shuttered in February, but it has taken over its Instagram account.
The restaurant specializes in seafood dishes such as smoked tuna tostadas with habanero dressing, quesadillas with grilled shrimp, octopus, or marlin, tilapia chicharrón, and a tropical ceviche with mango, avocado, and serrano.
A “not so fishy” menu offers a spicy chicken sandwich, dry-aged ribeyes, and the signature Báltico, which sneaks in some Manchego-stuffed shrimp. There is also a selection of wood-fired pizzas ranging from the usual pepperoni to unexpected varieties like salmon with capers and red onion and arrachera with peppers.
The online menu makes no mention of a full bar, but a teaser video posted by local realtor Yesica Monrreal hints it will at least have beer. Another still shows what appears to be a Bloody Mary, but we can’t vouch that the celery stick was stirring vodka.
Mariscos have recently been all the rage in Alamo City with the impending opening of several new concepts, including Valley imports Muelle 37 and La Costa Grill. Although not strictly Mexican, (a)mar is now bringing upscale mariscos to Pearl.
It’s unclear when Báltico will dip its toes into the market, but social media posts suggest it could debut as soon as October. A request for more information was not immediately returned.
