Bad Bunny La Casita pop-up in San Antonio sparks viral backlash

Bad Bunny accepts an award at the 68th Grammy Awards
A Bad Bunny-themed "La Casita" pop-up in San Antonio is facing viral backlash after social media reports alleged the event was poorly executed and censored creators’ political speech. The claims came after a group of creators attended a preview event held at That Venue at the Rim, located in the former home of The Rustic at 17619 La Cantera Pkwy.
The pop-up recreates La Casita, a recreation of a traditional Puerto Rican home used as a backdrop for the reggaeton star’s island residency and Debí Tirar Más Fotos tour. Fans can stop by Friday, February 6, through Sunday, February 8, for selfies, dance parties, and a “Benito Bowl” watch party.
San Antonio influencer Jacklyn Salinas was among those decrying That Venue’s alleged limits on expression on TikTok. According to Salinas, influencers were asked to paint a Bad Bunny-themed message on La Casita’s walls. She chose to echo Bad Bunny’s Grammy ceremony “Ice Out” speech.
In a follow-up video, she shared a letter she sent to the national promoters.“I…brought up a point privately about writing what I personally felt called to write, and I was immediately shot down,” Salinas wrote. “Then it was brought up in a group setting, and a manager said to ‘leave politics out.” To me, this isn’t about politics; it’s real life for a lot of people.”
Free speech wasn’t the only thing on the creators’ minds when they visited the preview. Austin content maker Arnold Ruelas said the space was far from finished when the invitees arrived, saying the venue was covered in dust with wet paint everywhere. In her video, Salinas shows the soles of her boots splotched with the signature La Casita pink.
That Venue did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but co-owner Moe Kassin told MySA that the brouhaha was a “series of unfortunate events.” According to him, the preview was not a formal influencer event, and the pop-up has since changed its stance on allowing anti-ICE messaging on the walls, as long as it doesn’t contain curse words.
Still, the scuffle hasn’t appeared to hurt sales. Friday's run has already sold out, and there are only limited tickets available for Saturday and Sunday. Those interested in checking the La Casita pop-up for themselves can find ticket links on That Venue’s Instagram profile.
