SUDDEN SHUTTERS
Afghan hidden gem restaurant temporarily closes in Castle Hills

Azro Authentic Afghan Cuisine is known for popular dishes like mantoo.
One of San Antonio’s few sources for Afghan cuisine is taking a break. Azro Authentic Afghan Cuisine appears to have moved out of its 2211 NW Military Hwy. restaurant, but the reason for the closure remains a mystery.
The closure was first noticed by a member of the popular San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group, who was told by a neighboring business that the concept was permanently shuttered. Several commenters said the move was only temporary.
That’s supported by the business itself. Although the main phone number for the business has been disconnected, Azro’s most recent social media post says the restaurant will return in April. It’s unclear whether it is renovating its current space or — as some group members suggested — moving into a new location in the same shopping center.
Azro has long been one of San Antonio’s best-kept secrets, serving traditional Afghan fare since 2014. Among the most popular dishes are mantoo (steamed dumpling with ground beef), Kabuli palow (lamb with basmati rice), kadu chalow (pumpkin with house yogurt), and lawangi morgh (chicken with onions, garlic, and chickpeas).
The old interior made the most of its strip mall setting with a warm earthtone color scheme and a clever floor treatment combining wood laminate with navy blue tiles. The decor featured various bric-a-brac, like hookahs and examples of the Asian country’s famous rugs and embroidery.
Azro did not immediately return a request for further information. We will update this article should the restaurant provide a more definite reopening date or details about a new location.
