IN MEMORIAM
San Antonio mourns beloved Leche de Tigre founder Axel Oliva

Axel Oliva was the heart of Leche de Tigre.
Axel Oliva, one of the three brothers behind San Antonio’s acclaimed Leche de Tigre, has died. He was 31.
“It’s with heavy hearts we share that our brother Axel Oliva tragically passed away yesterday,” wrote the restaurant in a March 30 Instagram post. The restaurant will be closed from March 31-April 2 to allow the family and staff time to grieve.
Axel and brothers Emil and Alec Oliva opened Leche de Tigre in a Southtown bungalow in February 2023. The Peruvian restaurant became an overnight success and one of Alamo City’s most-talked-about restaurants in a decade.
At the heart of the operation was Axel, running the front-of-house with familial warmth. Although the food was rightly lauded, his welcoming spirit made Leche de Tigre a place where diners would return time and again to celebrate special occasions or enjoy a weeknight meal.
That care led to a string of successes. Texas Monthly named Leche de Tigre one of its Best New Restaurants of 2024. In 2024, it became one of the first San Antonio restaurants to be included in the inaugural Texas Michelin Guide, an honor that was extended in 2025.
The Instagram post was quickly filled with tributes from the members of San Antonio’s hospitality community, who remembered Axel’s kindness and passion. Some restaurateurs offered help during the difficult time, a testament to how widely beloved the Oliva family is within Alamo City’s dining scene.
A public memorial service has been planned at 5 pm on April 2 at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave.
