OPENING ALERT
Andy's Frozen Custard churns out first Alamo Heights location
Andy's Frozen Custard will kick off July with a new opening in Alamo Heights.
Cult-favorite ice cream shop Andy's Frozen Custard is headed to one of San Antonio’s poshest neighborhoods. The family-owned chain will open its newest location at 8338 Broadway on Wednesday, July 1.
John and Carol Kuntz opened their first shop in 1986 in Osage Beach, Missouri, after falling in love with frozen custard in Wisconsin. With help from the owners of Milwaukee's iconic Leon's Frozen Custard, they struck out on their own, naming their new business after their son. He’s now the owner and CEO.
The chain has now spread to more than 140 locations in 14 states, but Andy's has only been in Texas since 2016. It's even newer in San Antonio, having debuted at 17927 West IH-10 in The Rim shopping center in 2022.
The growing franchise has found success in the South and Southwest with a richer take on the summertime staple. Unlike ice cream, Andy's frozen custard adds egg yolks to the base mix for a denser, creamier texture. The slow churn time makes for an even more indulgent treat.
Born in Coney Island, New York, the style became a Midwest specialty after the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Dairy-loving Midwesterners amped up the butterfat content and — more importantly to Andy’s — created the Concrete, a mixed ice cream creation that predated Dairy Queen’s Blizzard by a good 26 years.
Andy’s carries on the tradition by only offering the custards in vanilla or chocolate. But the base flavors can be mixed with a variety of sweet and savory toppings like cookie dough, Oreos, almonds, and strawberries. It also serves seasonal specials, sundaes, splits, packed pints, and Jackhammers — blended treats filled with a center add-on of choice.
The Alamo Heights outpost is the fifth San Antonio-area location. Its hours will be 11 am-11:30 pm, Sunday through Thursday, and 11 am-midnight, Fridays and Saturdays.
“We couldn’t be happier to bring Andy’s to Alamo Heights,” said Andy Kuntz, owner and CEO of Andy’s Frozen Custard, in a release. “Our team is ready to welcome neighbors and dessert lovers alike to enjoy our signature frozen custard, seasonal specials, and all the joy that comes with every scoop.”
