Gyro hero
Fast-growing Greek restaurant chain dips into San Antonio in 2022
A fast-casual franchise that offers a modern take on classic Mediterranean dishes is “Greecing” its wheels to get to San Antonio.
The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill — founded in 2011 by two third-generation restaurateurs in Las Vegas and now in growth mode, expanding across the country — will open a franchise location at 11647 Culebra Rd. early next year.
The San Antonio location, operated by franchisees Satheesh and Sosamma Mammen, will feature the concept’s chef-inspired, house-made menu of Greek favorites, traditional gyro and lamb, steak, and chicken souvlaki platters.
Appetizers will include the brand’s signature house-made dips (hummus, tzatziki, melitzanosalata, and the spicy roasted red pepper tirokafteri), as well as dolmades, and puff-pastry-stuffed spanakopita.
Other menu highlights include classic Greek salad and a Greek salad wrap; the Athenian burger; a Greek rice bowl; a mezze plate; an array of chicken, steak, shrimp, lamb, and falafel entrees; and feta fries.
And don’t skimp on dessert, as baklava (in traditional and ice cream forms), rice pudding, and Greek vanilla butter cookies are the perfect way to finish off a Mediterranean feast.
“We are very excited and look forward to our new adventure with The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill, especially since it is a part of the Alamo Ranch Community that we have grown to love,” says franchisee Satheesh Mammen, who, along with his wife, immigrated to the U.S. from India in 1980 with the goal of eventually opening their own business.
Though this will be the first Alamo City location for The Great Greek, the company, which currently has more than 100 eateries, has been rapidly expanding the fast-casual concept throughout the country and in Texas, recently opening its first location in Houston (with seven more planned there in the next five years, according to industry pub Restaurant News). The Great Greek also has a location in The Colony, north of Dallas, and has plans to open a restaurant in the Austin suburb of Cedar Park in the near future.
“We’re very pleased to announce this agreement for the San Antonio market,” says Bob Andersen, president of Great Greek Franchising LLC. “Our guests consistently tell us they enjoy our healthy menu choices without sacrificing flavors and enjoy being served in a friendly, comfortable environment. We really focus on delivering a terrific guest experience.”
