Game over for playful San Antonio bar and restaurant after 2 years in business
Less than two years after opening, TBD Bar + Social, a splashy new concept that took over Houlihan’s Loop 1604 West location in 2018, has shuttered. The restaurant, known for cocktails, comfort food, and lawn games, closed on August 26.
In a statement, TBD Bar + Social director of operations Donna Craine said the closure was a difficult decision.
"TBD Bar + Social is a great concept, and we have enjoyed the past eighteen months in San Antonio," she says. "Unfortunately, we were unable to reach a business agreement regarding our rent that made sense from a business perspective."
TBD opened in March 2018 as a test concept meant to spread across the country. Although the menu of approachable appetizers, burgers, and tacos was similar to Houlihan’s, it boasted a unique environment anchored by an indoor artificial glass patio decked out with colorful metal chairs and games like foosball and Jenga.
Although similar concepts combining grub and games are becoming increasingly popular nationwide, TBD never found its groove. A second location in Fairview Heights, Illinois, ended its run in May, after less than a year in business.
Craine did not say if the TBD brand has been abandoned entirely, though the Houlihan’s concept has not given up on the Alamo City. An employee at the 14601 N. I-35 Houlihan’s assured that location isn't going anywhere.
