Ice houses have a special place in South Texas history, dating back to the 1920s — they've done everything from refrigerating goods to storing ice to cooling off neighborhoods. With its soaring temperatures, summer ushers in ice house season in San Antonio, so it's only fitting that we highlight seven hot spots to chill out with ice-cold beverages.
Alamo Ice House
Longnecks of Lone Star will do just fine at this delightful and delicious brew and barbecue hangout. Alamo Ice House is also home to a Frito chili pie, a lovely summer find.
B&D Ice House
This popular ice house deserves all the accolades. Try the salt and pepper brisket with a Yellow Rose, Lone Pint Brewery's single malt, single hop IPA.
Big Texas Ice House
Big Texas Ice House has an expansive beer list, y'all. There are ciders, pale ales, IPAs, lagers, porters, and seasonals, plus a wine selection and cocktail category dubbed Fancy Schmancy. We tried the Tex-Mex Cooler, and it was good.
Blue Star Brewing Company
Take a stroll on the river, view some art, and stop in to Blue Star for fish and chips and a Southtown Sour, which is refreshingly dry and tasty.
Cullum's Attagirl
Fried bologna sandwich, super-cold North Peak Brewing Company's Thunder Oat IPA, and Topo Chico? It's heaven.
Wurzbach Ice House
You're in for a good time at this fun tavern that boasts a giant list of beers. They had us at the tagline: "Home of good-looking beer and ice-cold bartenders." Try the jalapeño cheese nuggets, recommended by the regulars.
