Sweet new Alta Vista bakery boasts goodies made from scratch daily
Like many bakers and chefs, Becky Medellin acquired a love for baking from her parents — her dad was a food specialist in the Navy for 20 years, and her mom is a great home cook.
"I started a business in 2012, baking cakes and cupcakes for clients from my home; then in 2014 I opened a storefront in Edinburg, Texas," she says. "In 2015, I got married and moved to San Antonio so that my husband could work with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) here."
Medellin and her husband now own Scratch Kitchen, nestled in a Victorian house in the Alta Vista neighborhood. The bakery's grand opening is May 6.
The charming abode, with original hardwood, beadboard ceilings, and reclaimed accents, certainly makes Scratch Kitchen unique. But it's the baked goods, all of which are made from scratch (even the sandwich bread), that make this bakery so special.
"All our items are handcrafted — from our quiche crusts and our pigs-in-a-blanket to our bread and our glazed shortbread cookies," Medellin adds. "Our cupcakes are baked fresh every morning; they are never day-old."
Menu items include cupcakes, lemon squares, cakes, cookies, brownies, apricot bars, cheesecakes, chocolate mousse, and more. The breakfast menu includes danish, cinnamon rolls, quiche, pigs-in-a-blanket and scratch toast. The lunch menu showcases sandwiches, soup, and salads.
Scratch Kitchen also offers brewed White Elephant Coffee, a San Antonio local company, which Medellin says has been a huge hit since opening last month.
"We are thinking — baked French toast, a croque monsieur, and some other fun menu items for brunch," Medellin adds. A catering menu will be released soon, in addition to hosting private events in the dining room and on the pet-friendly patio.
Medellin hopes that customers of all ages will enjoy the unique atmosphere and tasty treats. "We are family-owned and -operated and we bake from the heart," she adds.
Scratch Kitchen's hours will be changing in the next few weeks: Tuesday-Saturday 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Sunday for brunch 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Follow Scratch Kitchen on Facebook for updates.
