'The Girl' grows up
Restaurant from famed San Antonio chef fizzles out of Pearl food hall
One of Texas' most renowned chefs is leaving the Pearl's famed food hall. The Good Kind, brainchild of chef Tim "the Girl" McDiarmid, is closing its location in the Bottling Department Food Hall at the end of the month.
True to its name, The Good Kind has served up its menu of locally sourced salads, grain bowls, sandwiches, and smoothies since the food hall opened in 2017. The decision to depart, says McDiarmid, comes from her desire to streamline and focus her energy on other projects, namely the restaurant's Southtown location and her catering business.
“After spending a week at the James Beard Women’s Entrepreneur Leadership Award Program, I really had a chance to think about what I wanted to focus on as a culinary leader in the community,” McDiarmid says in a release. “I want to be able to collaborate and create in the beautiful space we have designed for our amazing customers."
The chef then goes on to highlight the Pearl's support of San Antonio-based brands, adding that the development has "been an incredibly supportive partner in developing The Good Kind brand."
Though the Pearl says it will add a new tenant after The Good Kind's January 31 departure, it's not offering up details, saying only it will announce the new concept "soon." But, true to the project's mission of launching local brands, the Bottling Department's newest restaurant will almost certainly be a local concept.
"It was our vision to have the space act as an incubator in San Antonio and we are thrilled to see it working its course," says Elizabeth Fauerso, chief marketing officer of Pearl, about The Good Kind's departure.
“The Good Kind was one of the original tenants in the Bottling Department and we are thrilled Chef Tim was able to share her delicious, healthy food with us for nearly three years,” she continues. “We’re excited to see how Chef Tim continues to innovate at the Southtown location and we look forward to opening the space up for new concepts."
Fans of The Good Kind can continue to find McDiarmid's sustainable, healthful fare at the restaurant's 1127 S. Saint Mary's St. location, which also houses the chefs two other concepts: Tim the Girl Catering and Ivy Hall Events, an event space.
