Alamo Heights: A family-friendly haven within the big city
There are so many great places to live in San Antonio that it helps to have an expert on your side. The Neighborhood Guide presented by Kuper Sotheby's International Realty gives you insider access from the agents who live and work there, providing in-the-know info about your possible new community.

Real estate agent Kim Johnson knows the Alamo Heights neighborhood inside and out, having lived there since 2003 and worked in the area since 2009.
“I was drawn here because of the strong sense of community, the friendly neighbors, and the best schools,” she says. “Alamo Heights has its own police and fire departments, so it's really like you live in a small town but with the conveniences and culture that comes with a big city.”
One of those close-by cultural destinations is the historic Pearl area, which Kim favors for all its restaurants, a farmers market on the weekends, great shopping, and the incredible sense of community.
When she’s not working, Kim enjoys serving the civic and nonprofit community; she’s on MD Anderson’s Advance Team, a volunteer board dedicated to the mission to end cancer. You might also find her indulging her love of cooking.
Kim offered up some of her personal favorites about life in Alamo Heights. Here's her guide to the area:
Where to eat & drink
Kim’s two favorite dining destinations are Cappy’s Restaurant ("the patio is wonderful during nice weather," she says) and Piatti, which has been serving soulful Italian food since 1987. What makes it so good? The pasta is made fresh in-house every day.
Where to play
For a day of open-air shopping, The Quarry Market boasts a robust list of retailers, dining, and entertainment options.
What to see
Celebrating 70 years in 2024, The McNay was the first museum of modern art in Texas and has 25 acres of works to explore, from paintings and sculpture to works on paper and more.
And, naturally, The Alamo and the San Antonio River Walk are must-sees. Alamo Heights is only about five miles from these landmark destinations.
Where to live
“Alamo Heights homes are mostly older homes with a warm and beautiful environment around them,” says Kim. “The charming neighborhood is very safe and beautiful, catering to a family-friendly lifestyle.”
