Deco District venue asks San Antonio for help to keep the lights on
The Starlighter is in danger of closure.
One of San Antonio’s most inclusive entertainment venues is in danger of closing after getting behind on rent. The Starlighter, at 910 Fredericksburg Rd. in the Deco District, has launched a crowdfunding campaign so it can continue hosting indie shows and all-ages events.
Co-owner Jacob Guerrero took to social media to post the plea for help. Besides the rent payments, he says the club needs investments in air-conditioning, flooring, and window tinting to enhance the customer experience.
“We’ve poured everything into keeping our employees and performers paid, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for those who step onto our stage for the first time,” wrote Guerrero. “This commitment, however, has left us struggling to keep up with rent and unable to invest in necessary upgrades.”
Guerrero says the business has been working with the landlord, and part of the funds raised will go towards a TABC license to make the venue more sustainable. Currently, the spot offers beer at shows on a donation basis.
Jason Valdez, Selena Rios, Kayla Guerrero, and Jacob Guerrero first opened Starlighter in 2021. Besides hosting live music, the venue regularly hosts vendor markets and has become a hub for alt-drag performances. The latter made the business a victim of online attacks after hosting an all-ages performance, forcing it to cancel its lineup of shows in December 2022.
Currently, the crowdfunding campaign has a long way to go towards its $40,000 goal, but it’s clear it has San Antonio’s creative communities behind it. Some of the donors include past vendors and bands that have appeared on Starlighter’s stage.
Fans can also support the business by grabbing a matcha, latte, or dirty soda from Moth Milk, the Guerreros’ recently opened witchy beverage pop-up inside the venue.
