San Antonio Missions launch 'Breakfast Tacos' alter ego for 2027 season
The San Antonio Missions will play as the San Antonio Breakfast Tacos during three games in 2027.
San Antonio Missions fans who are triggered by flying chanclas have a new alter ego to root for. Alamo City’s minor league baseball team will play three games as the San Antonio Breakfast Tacos, starting April 16, 2027.
Via a release, the Missions said it was the team’s newest effort to recognize San Antonio’s Mexican American heritage.
“As San Antonio’s professional baseball club, the Missions have always represented various aspects of what makes this city special, starting with the five Spanish missions that helped found the city of San Antonio three centuries ago,” said General Manager David Gasaway in a statement. “Now, we introduce our new alternate identity as the Breakfast Tacos, honoring a food that has fully captured the essence of San Antonio.”
Although every local has their favorite order, the team stuck to an icon when choosing the mascot’s look: the classic bean and cheese. The mustachioed character is charging out of his foil wrapper (or perhaps escaping a tossed flip-flop).
The new uniform is “cast-iron black,” highlighted by “refried brown” sleeves. Other team colors include “frijol,” “platinum foil,” “melted gold,” and “tortilla tan.” Merch, including a “Come and Eat It” T-shirt, is already available for purchase online.
The Missions note that the breakfast taco has long been a symbol of city pride. The team traces the dish’s origins back to the 1900s, which may be true, but it was hardly a household term in San Antonio — or the rest of Texas at that time.
While Northern Mexico and the Texas borderlands can certainly stake a claim to the breakfast taco’s invention, San Antonio had a strong hand in popularizing it. In the ‘70s, news reports began extolling the “exotic” treat, and the earliest locations of Taco Cabana made it into a 24/7 staple.
All of this, by the way, was well before Texas Monthly decreed breakfast tacos an Austin obsession in its 1986 taco issue.
Moving on from the Taco Wars, the Missions have long kept it puro. The Flying Chanclas, introduced in 2018, will continue to play Thursday games. And although technically no longer a San Antonio company, Ricos will continue to be the gold standard at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
