Here are 9 San Antonio musical acts getting their groove on at SXSW
Hundreds of musicians are headed for Austin for the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival, with a handful of native and current San Antonio musical acts taking part in the fun. With the prevalence of unofficial showcases, it's hard to know what the total number of San Antonians will be, so we'll focus on who's on the main list.
Here’s a rundown of official SXSW musical showcases reflective of the diversity of sounds from the Alamo City.
Jay Amari
The up-and-coming R&B singer from San Antonio previously won a Coast 2 Coast artist showcase contest in Houston. He goes on stage at Vaquero Taquero at 10:20 pm on March 11.
Combo Cósmico
A cumbia quintet from San Antonio, Combo Cósmico incorporates trippy sounds in their music. Their debut album, “Cumbia Ovnidera,” was released in 2023. They’ll perform at 7 pm on March 13 at the Hotel Vegas patio.
Volcán
The San Antonio-based Latin band takes on various genres, including cumbia, salsa, and calypso. The group will hit the Hotel Vegas patio stage at 1:20 am on March 14.
Yung CEO
The native San Antonian rapper will have an official SXSW appearance at 7 pm on March 15 at Revival Coffee. Yung CEO will also present some unofficial shows March 14-16 at different spots around Austin.
Bamsworth Belli
Having grown up in San Antonio, Bamsworth Belli has relied on his love for hip-hop to overcome a plethora of personal obstacles, such as mental health challenges and homelessness. He opened for Lil Wayne at the 2017 Mala Luna music festival in San Antonio. He has a show set for 10 pm on March 16 at Vaquero Taquero.
MDuke
A San Antonio native, MDuke mixes traditional hip-hop and Afro-pop with all sorts of soulful modern observations on society. He’ll perform at 9:45 pm on March 16 at Revival Coffee.
Bill Baird
A musician, writer, and amateur naturalist living in San Antonio, Baird will bring his indie pop sensibilities to an official SXSW performance at 1 am on March 16 at Lambert’s.
Kalamari
Kalamari (aka Michael Walker), born and bred in San Antonio, channels the funk of George Clinton and neo-soul hip-hop/R&B of Smino in his music. Kalamari dropped his first two EPs, “Dance to My Pain” and “The Bounce is Back,” in 2023. He’ll perform at 8:45 pm on March 16 at Revival Coffee.
Kin Faux
The San Antonio-based country band specializes in a Texas version of red dirt music, a blend of alt-country, rock, folk, and a little Americana.They’ve had hit radio singles, and won several Texas Country Music awards, including the honor of being named Band of the Year in 2021. Kin Faux will play the Continental Club at 12 am on March 16.
