San Antonio's Rivercenter shifts gears with new custom toy car shop

Customers build tricked-out toy cars at Ridemakerz.
Think of it as a Build-A-Bear Workshop with a little more octane. Ridemakerz, a playful shop that allows customers to build customized toy cars, is revving up its first San Antonio store in the Shops of Rivercenter at 849 E Commerce Street #451.
Although a request for further comment from Ridemakerz was not returned in time for publication, a rep for the downtown mall confirmed the new shop. Recent paperwork with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation estimates a December completion date, but state filings are subject to change.
Entrepreneur Larry Andreini founded Ridemakerz in 2007, bringing in former Build-A-Bear CEO Maxine Clark and Chip Foose, a hot rod designer and host of TLC reality show Overhaulin’. By 2009, the company had closed most of its physical locations, but has recently begun staging a retail comeback at tourist destinations like Branson, Missouri, and Bloomington, Minnesota’s Mall of America.
As with Build-A-Bear, Ridemakerz offers guests the chance to take home a one-of-a-kind toy. Shoppers choose a body style from carmakers like Chevrolet, Dodge, or Ford, add rims and tires, then trick out their ride with stickers, mini spoilers, and other additions.
Prices start at $24.99 and go up depending on accessories. Race car fans also have the option to build remote control vehicles, monster trucks, semis, and police cars.
Ridemakerz is the latest concept transforming the Shops of Rivercenter from a retail hub to an entertainment destination. Concepts like mini golf complex Holey Moley and chef Jason Dady’s upcoming Mexico Ceaty are breathing new life into the almost 40-year-old shopping center as many of the nation’s malls sit vacant.
