John Leguizamo docuseries turns its lens on San Antonio culture

.
Colombian-American actor John Leguizamo is putting the spotlight on San Antonio as part of the second season of his MSNBC travel show Leguizamo Does America. After filming with director Ben DeJesus last spring, the Alamo City episode of the docuseries will finally air on August 10.
In each episode, the Romeo + Juliet star journeys through thriving Latine communities across the United States, highlighting culture, history, and food. The first season’s road trip skipped Texas entirely, focusing on New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago.
“For season two, I wanted to go deeper into America and put a magnifying glass on Latino exceptionalism, Latino ingenuity, and Latino genius,” said Leguizamo in an earlier press release. “Our culture has made America what it is since 1492, and nobody knows it. We built and fought for this country, and suffered in America for who we are. Let’s celebrate our legacy of contributions that continue to be vital to the prosperity of this great country.”
According to an Instagram post from DeJesus, Leguizamo met with some serious heavy-hitters during his San Antonio stay. Former Texas Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla, Congressman Joaquin Castro, Tejana musician Shelly Lares, civil rights activists Graciela Sanchez and Rosie Castro, and chefs Rico Torres and Diego Galicia of Mixtli.
Locals who can’t wait until the official air date can head to the Carver Community Cultural Center on Friday, August 8 for a special premiere screening and remarks from Castro. The event is free to attend, but RSVPs are encouraged.
New episodes of Leguizamo Does America drop at 9 pm on MSNBC and Peacock. San Antonians can also watch the series through premium subscriptions on Hulu and Amazon Prime.
