La Semana Alegre brings back the '80s to Fiesta San Antonio

Men Without Hats headlines the first night of La Semana Alegre.
After being revived in 2024 following nearly three decades of silence, La Semana Alegre is amping up for its first year as an official Fiesta San Antonio event. The multi-day music festival, held April 23-24 at Hemisfair, has cranked out a lineup that blends local favorites, indie acts, and chart-topping ‘80s icons.
Before La Semana Alegre folded in 1995, it was one of the state’s most eclectic festivals, booking raucous metal acts like Blue Öyster Cult and Motörhead alongside pop, country, and Tejano acts, including The Bangles, New Kids on the Block, Selena, and Toby Keith. The 2026 edition is, fittingly, a genre buffet.
"Building on the legacy of the original La Semana Alegre, one of downtown’s most beloved Fiesta-era music festivals, the modern revival has quickly reestablished itself as a can’t-miss downtown event for music fans and Fiesta-goers alike — blending nostalgia, culture, and community in the heart of the city," say the organizers in a release.
The Thursday, April 23 sets are all about that ‘80s, trading the festival’s early metal sound for pure pop. Bow Wow Wow (”I Want Candy”), Tommy Tutone (”867-5309/Jenny”), and Animotion (”Obsession”) are all slated to play, but the act to catch is "Safety Dance" scribes Men Without Hats. The band has been going through a 21st-century renaissance thanks to TikTok, including the earworm "Love in the Age of War" and their recent single "I Love the '80s."
Later in the evening, indie darlings Girl in a Coma will perform, as well as La Semana Alegre legend Joe “King” Carrasco.
Headlining the stage on Friday, April 24 will be the Austin-based duo Ghostland Observatory. The indie group had an underground hit with "Sad Sad City" in 2006 that captured their high-octane sound. The rave rockers will be joined by one-man band 54 Ultra, bedroom soulsters Los Retros, pan-Latin modernists La Santa Cecilia, and local bands Chavela and Pop Pistol.
La Semana Alegre benefits the Hemisfair Conservatory, which seeks to preserve one of San Antonio's most storied neighborhoods as a gathering place, walkable community, and cultural space. The two-night event will also include a vendor market, food, immersive attractions, and crafts.
Tickets are available at the official La Semana Alegre website, with early bird specials offering a full two-day pass for $30. VIP tickets are also available and provide access to a special VIP lounge, dedicated bar, happy hour bites, and an elevated riser viewing area.
