GAME OVER
San Antonio anime and gaming convention calls it quits after 5 years
Cosplayers pose at the 2023 convention.
After a successful July run, one of San Antonio’s favorite fan experiences is unexpectedly logging off. In an October 9 statement, Kawacon said it will not be returning in 2027.
“After much consideration and with heavy hearts, we have made the difficult decision to cease Kawacon operations for the foreseeable future,” wrote the organizers. “Over the past five years, Kawacon has grown into something far beyond what we originally imagined. What started as a vision became a thriving community that brought thousands of people together through their shared love of fandom, creativity, and connection”
Kawacon staged its first convention as a one-day event in February 2022, gradually growing to a full weekend. It was first pitched as the winter answer to San Japan, although its fifth edition, “The Beach Episode,” moved to the summer.
Like similar fancons devoted to Japanese culture, Kawacon combined cosplay contests, dance battles, panels, and a market hall vending hundreds of goods. Although the guests were not household names, the titles they represented were well-known to anyone in anime and gaming circles.
Kawacon’s announcement drew in a chorus of comments from fans, but its loss seemed especially acute with its vendors. The owner of Texas Vendor’s United called it the “gold standard” for conventions, and a frequent DJ applauded it for leaning into the otaku community instead of chasing flavors of the week.
The event’s planners did not immediately return a request for information about the reasoning behind the event’s demise. We will update the article if they have any further comments.
