Popular comedian moves San Antonio show to avoid controversial crowd
Cristela Alonzo is now performing May 9.
A popular Texas-born comedian has rescheduled her San Antonio show after finding out a revue associated with controversial Austin-based comedian Tony Hinchcliffe was scheduled just steps away. Cristela Alonzo moved her Midlife Mixtape tour stop at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre from April 11 to May 9, saying she didn’t want to expose her fans to an uncomfortable environment.
Alonzo said she learned from a fan that the Killers of Kill Tony tour, featuring comedians Ari Matti, David Lucas, Hans Kim, and Martin Phillips, had the same date booked at the Majestic Theatre.
"The majority of my followers are Latino, and in the time that we're in right now, I do not feel comfortable having MY people around a demo that includes people that support [those] atrocious things that are happening to my community," Alonzo explained on Instagram. "So, I'm looking to change dates for the San Antonio show that will ensure that my people have the best time, and where I don't have to cross paths backstage with anyone I don't want to."
Although Hinchcliffe is not performing the Majestic, it does feature several staples of Kill Tony, a live podcast often associated with the “entertainment manosphere.” Hinchcliffe has drawn backlash for viral moments like calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” during a Trump rally and hurling racist slurs against Asian American comedian Peng Dang. Throughout the time, he has kept a strict “no apologies” worldview.
Born in Hidalgo and raised in San Juan, Alonzo took a more conventional route to comedy stardom. She got her start writing for Carlos Mencia's Mind of Mencia on Comedy Central before becoming a semi-finalist on the TV competition Last Comic Standing. In 2014, she created the ABC sitcom Cristela, becoming the first Mexican American woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own primetime comedy.
Alonzo was unrepentant in criticizing the Killers of Kill Tony tour. The graphic for the May 9 date reads “I said what I said and regret nothing.” All tickets to the April show will be transferred to the new set with the same seats. Alonzo said she will refund fans who can’t make it and possibly add a second show, depending on how transfers shake out.
