Beyoncé surprises Selena fans with new 'Como la Flor' mashup

More than two years after releasing Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé is still refusing to be pinned down by genre. Now, for the expanded 20th anniversary edition of her iconic album B'Day, she is trying on a sparkly purple jumpsuit.

On Friday, September 4, the Texas superstar released “Irreemplazable,” a mashup of “Irreplaceable” and “Como la Flor.” The bonus track pairs the melody and Spanish-language lyrics of the 2006 Bey hit with the backing track of Selena Quintanilla’s most iconic song — adding a few dubbed verses from the Queen of Tejano herself.

According to a release, Beyoncé “revered Selena” and credits the late singer for inspiring Irreemplazable, her Spanish EP released in 2007. The mashup was recorded with full approval from Quintanilla’s estate — a rarity since the singer’s passing in 1995.

In a clip shared on Selena’s official Instagram, Beyoncé recounts meeting the icon at Houston’s Galleria mall before Destiny’s Child brought her fame.

“Definitely, growing up in Texas, I heard her on the radio,” Beyoncé said. “And I think listening to her album, even though I didn’t know exactly what she was singing, it helped me with my pronunciation in the studio.”

The release comes as Selena’s family is making headlines for an alleged lawsuit filed by sibling A.B. Quintanilla III against his sister, Suzette Arriaga — a lawsuit Suzette and her mother Marcella deny exists. Still, Selena’s big brother put aside the public squabbling to praise “Irreemplazable.”

“Two Queens on one cumbia??? Beyoncé and Selena???” wrote Quintanilla on Instagram. “Thank you @beyonce for showing love and recording one of your classics with one of Selena’s classics.”

Chris Perez, who was married to Selena at the time of her death, was just as effusive.

“One of my top favorite singers @beyonce just sang along with my absolute favorite singer @selenaqofficial,” he wrote on social media. “I love it!”

Although some of his fans grumbled, Perez quickly took naysayers to task.

“Say what you want. Shout out to Beyoncé for showing respect to an ICON. Some of you can be a bit much at times,” he commented.

The B'Day anniversary edition is streaming now on Spotify and Apple Music. In addition to the “Como la Flor” homage, the album features a new version of “Get Me Bodied” called “Cuerpo Tumbao,” featuring vocals from reggaetón hitmaker Maluma and a sample from Celia Cruz's "La Negra Tiene Tumbao."
