Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetle....
Manic, macabre Broadway hit Beetlejuice summoned to San Antonio
Break out the Handbook for the Recently Deceased; Everyone's favorite punk rock demon is bringing his dark comedy to the Majestic Theatre. Beetlejuice, the Broadway musical based on Tim Burton's classic 1988 film, will be in San Antonio from February 13-18.
Mirroring the manic, macabre energy of the movie, the musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a teen who's more at home with haunts than humans. Her life takes a turn for the bizarre when she encounters a pair of sweet spirits and the stripe-loving, wise-cracking demon himself. It's an otherworldly reminder to seize every precious "Day-O" we've got.
According to Isabella Esler, who plays Lydia in her first professional role after high school, a big part of what draws people in is the amount of audience interaction throughout the show.
"Each performance is different and more personal to each audience member," says Esler in an email to CultureMap. "I think this show makes people feel like a part of it! ... Beetlejuice does a lot of talking with the audience, which makes every performance different and more personal to each audience member."
In addition to fun costuming, the musical has an irreverent score by Tony nominee Eddie Perfect and book by Tony nominees Scott Brown and Anthony King. The Broadway production of Beetlejuice saw success during its run, making history with a cast recording that blew up the box office.
"People really seem to love the show!" says Esler. "Every time I perform in a new city, I see all kinds of fans that are dressed up as different kinds of characters or wearing Beetlejuice stripes."
Tony winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!) directs the production, bringing his signature visual flair. After a remarkable 366 shows at the Winter Garden Theatre and a triumphant return at the Marquis Theatre — both on Broadway — the musical has become a viral sensation, capturing a whole new generation of fans.
According to Esler, audiences in San Antonio can expect to "laugh a lot" and leave the theater "feeling great." For fans of the movie who might have a hard time letting go, she says, "You will love the show because it still has all of the beloved characters that you know and love!"
