The Lights at Night Are Big and Bright
Free drive-thru holiday light experience dazzles downtown San Antonio
Hemisfair and Centro San Antonio are bringing an extra dose of cheer to San Antonio ahead of the holidays. On Saturday, December 19, the nonprofit organizations are partnering on a free drive-thru holiday lights experience, an event designed to celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and the winter season all in one.
For one day only, Hemisfair will turn into a magical winter wonderland, complete with real snow and decorations from Mandie’s Balloons. Visitors can see real-life activations from area small businesses, such as carolers from the American Caroling Company and reindeer from Zoomagination.
Other highlights of the holiday extravaganza include:
- Jumping elves from Aqua Acro
- Animals from Happy Tails Entertainment
- Drum circle from The Synergy Studio
- State-of-the-art sound system by Galaxy Productions
- More than 110,400 pounds of ice turned into real-life snow by Mireles Ice
As a bonus, the first 100 vehicles to enter on Saturday will receive a free bag of kettle corn from Pepito’s Italian Ice.
“We wanted to provide a free experience for the community to celebrate the holidays in a safe and socially distant way,” said Andres Andujar, Hemisfair CEO. “This inclusive celebration will offer something for everyone, whether you want a selfie with Santa from the safety of your vehicle or to witness the wonder of the festival of lights.”
The event also gives locals a chance to celebrate the best of downtown, a neighborhood hit particularly hard as the pandemic crippled tourism.
"We are encouraging residents to make new downtown memories this holiday season,” said Matt Brown, CEO of Centro San Antonio, in a release. “This partnership with Hemisfair offers locals a chance to do just that, in a new way with public health and safety in mind. Make downtown your holiday destination this season and every season.”
To see the spectacular, vehicles should enter at East Cesar E. Chavez and Hemisfair Boulevard. The fun runs on December 19 from 3-5 pm.
