Hemisfair reels in favorite '80s flicks for free outdoor movie series
If you love radical '80s pop culture, Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair is the place to be in September. Starting September 1, the San Antonio gathering place is rolling out a free film series dedicated to some of the most popular films from the decade.
Every city has a perfect place for outdoor movies, and Hemisfair is that idyllic spot in San Antonio. Screens will be set up on the lawn, near Yanaguana Garden, for four Saturdays in September.
Kicking off with The Blues Brothers, the free film screenings start at dusk, but organizers encourage attendees to arrive by 6:30 pm (early birds can score free sunglasses). Pregaming activities include pop-up vendors like San Antonio’s own Piccadilly Popcorn and Flamingo Donuts, as well as alternating musical talent.
A DJ will spin ‘80s tunes before The Blues Brothers hits the screen on September 1, while ‘80s cover band Vertigo will open for the screening of Better Off Dead on September 8 and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure on September 29.
Skipping the dance floor pre-film? Don’t be a total wallflower. The giant chess and checkers board and foosball tables at Hemisfair may be more your speed. Or you can bring the little ones for a splash pad or playground session to burn off some energy before the opening credits.
Food and beverage options include bites from onsite restaurants Dough Pizzeria Napoletana, Con Safos Cocina y Cantina, CommonWealth Coffeehouse & Bakery, and Paleteria San Antonio. Beer and wine from Dough and Con Safos are welcome on the lawn during film screenings; guests may also bring a picnic, lawn chairs, blankets, and pets.
With back-to-school season starting, this series is the perfect Saturday treat for families after a busy week — and maybe even a handy bribe to get your kids to do their homework.
The full schedule is as follows:
- September 1 — The Blues Brothers
