Inspiring new rock climbing gym taking shape on San Antonio's Northwest Side
A new climbing gym is taking shape on the Northwest Side. This week, InspireRock Indoor Climbing Gym announced it has closed on a location just south of the University of Texas at San Antonio campus.
Owner Paul Short says the space is so new, it hasn't even been assigned an address, but is located near the corner of UTSA and UTEX boulevards, a few blocks west of I-10.
InspireRock is designed to accommodate all levels of climbing, the company touts, and the San Antonio space will feature "vertical, overhang, crack climbing, bouldering, top rope, lead rope, as well as world-class route setting."
Considering the city's climbing culture, Short says selecting San Antonio for InspireRock's new home made sense.
"SA has a great climbing community, but unfortunately has very few indoor climbing options," he says. "We will build the first full ropes [tall] climbing gym in the city. We look forward to introducing San Antonians to this lifelong sport that they can enjoy for years to come."
To get those lifelong climbers started, InspireRock offers classes for beginner, advanced, and youth climbers, as well as team options. Like its classes, the gym provides a variety of membership deals, including both individual and group packages.
For those San Antonians who aren't quite ready to strap on a harness and hit the wall, InspireRock's new location will also offer a yoga studio, fitness area, and "seating for socializing and relaxing with the climbing community."
This is the third location for InspireRock, which opened its first gym in Spring in 2014 and a second and Cypress location in 2018. The first San Antonio location is scheduled to open in spring 2021.
