An entertainment center that’s a mash-up of Hollywood, Disney World, and Las Vegas is on tap for the San Antonio suburb of Schertz. Construction just started on EVO Entertainment Group’s 73,000-square-foot complex at The Ranch at Old Wiederstein shopping center, with the opening set for February 2019.

Highlights of the EVO development (think Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on steroids) include:

  • A 10-screen, dine-in movie theater offering service available from the push of a button on your luxury recliner
  • Reserved seating
  • 16 bowling lanes
  • More than 100 arcade games
  • Multilevel laser tag
  • A virtual reality space
  • A full-service bar and restaurant
  • Spaces for private events
  • An outdoor patio featuring games, fire pits and big-screen TVs

“Our company has called Central Texas home since the very beginning, and Schertz has always seemed like a perfect match,” Mitchell Roberts, CEO of San Marcos-based EVO Entertainment Group, said in a release. “When we first developed the cinema-hybrid model, we did so with outstanding guest experience in mind and have since made some truly innovative and impressive improvements to the concept.”

Roberts is the grandson of Lee Roy Mitchell, founder and executive chairman of the Plano-based Cinemark movie theater chain. Mitchell was CEO of Cinemark from 1987 to 2006, and was chairman of the National Association of Theatre Owners from 2006 to 2009.

Since its founding in 2014, EVO has grown from 11 screens at one location to nearly 50 screens (along with 22 bowling lanes, two full-service bar-and-restaurant combos, and more than 200 arcade games) at four locations. The existing locations are in Kyle, New Braunfels, and San Marcos.
