Walmart debuts sweeping renovations at Northwest San Antonio store

Walmart is making an investment in seven local stores.
In April, Walmart announced a sweeping plan to update 67 Texas stores. On Friday, June 13, San Antonio shoppers will get a first look at the renovations when the first locally redone location opens at 5555 de Zavala Rd.
The store has not received any significant updates since it was first built in 1998. A release says the improvements include expanded clothing and home sections, a team sports section stocked with University of Texas San Antonio merch, and tons of other upgrades, including:
- A more open, customer-centric floor plan
- An increased pet department
- Upgraded signage throughout the store
- Upgraded coolers and freezers in the grocery section
- A remodeled electronics area
"Our stores often serve as the heartbeat of the communities we operate in, and these remodels are a testament to our dedication to enhancing that role," said Southwest Business Unit Operations senior VP Paul Lewellen in a previous statement. "By investing in our stores and associates, we are not only improving the shopping experience but also reinforcing our commitment to being a vital part of the community's fabric, helping to build a brighter future for all."
The reopening will also be the debut of a colorful new mural highlighting the spirit of San Antonio. During the grand opening celebrations, guests can expect samples from famous vendors like Coca-Cola and visits from "familiar mascots." The release didn't specify whether that would be the Spurs Coyote, UTSA's Rowdy the Roadrunner, or Walmart's own Smiley the Lion, but we're betting H-E-Buddy has other plans.
After the ribbon-cutting, the company will also give out a bunch of cash to community organizations, including two local public schools, two UTSA student organizations, a youth shooting sports group, and a veteran's trauma recovery nonprofit.
The de Zavala store is one of seven San Antonio Walmart stores getting the makeover treatment, part of a bigger plan to eventually redo 650 stores nationwide. The remaining local locations due for a remodel include:
- 4226 de Zavala Rd.
- 5025 NW Loop 410
- 1200 SE Military Dr.
- 3302 SE Military Pkwy.
- 9526 W. Military Dr.
- 1603 Vance Jackson Rd.
