DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE
San Antonio Fiesta faces a soggy start but clearer skies on the way

San Antonio Fiesta usually sees partygoers sweating through guayaberas, but this year, rainstorms have brought unseasonably chilly temps and flash flood warnings. The downpours have already cancelled the Texas Cavaliers River Parade and Fiesta De Los Reyes on Monday, April 20, but will weather continue to put a damper on the annual festivities?
On Monday, rainfall topped five inches in San Antonio over a five-day period, according to KSAT. The conditions caused the National Weather Service to issue flash flood advisories for the area, causing the delayed start to San Antonio’s busiest Fiesta week.
“The City appreciates the cooperation of the Fiesta Commission, Consejos, and Texas Cavaliers and understands the disappointment of our residents, but safety is a prime concern to avoid loss of life,” San Antonio officials wrote in a release.
The accumulated rain was still causing a few cancellations and postponements on Tuesday, April 21, including the Army Day at the Alamo, Disability SA’s Celebration Day at the Fiesta Carnival, and Eva’s Heroes Ain’t Gonna Resta ’Til After Fiesta dance. Fiesta de los Reyes, meanwhile, moved its 10 am opening time to noon.
According to the Alamo City forecast, the clouds are not leaving San Antonio just yet, but the heavy rain is pushing to the east. Wednesday, April 22, still has a significant 43-percent chance of rain, but most of the risk is in the morning.
The outlook for the end of the week — when beloved traditions like the Battle of the Flowers Parade, Fiesta Flambeau, and NIOSA take place — looks more favorable for attendees with only a slight chance of rain on the current forecast.
But some familiar advice will once again be applicable. With temperatures climbing towards 88 degrees and a muggy atmosphere, it’s important to hydrate between all those preparadas.
