big friendly night out
San Antonio theater celebrates 30 years in giant Roald Dahl opening night party
San Antonio families in search of a little magic in the arts can stop by a big friendly anniversary celebration this May.
Magik Theatre, one of the leading San Antonio organizations for kids' enrichment is about to launch its stage adaptation of the Roald Dahl book The BFG; The opening night celebration at Hemisfair Park on May 4 will also serve as a 30th anniversary bash and an end-of-season lookahead. Attendees will be the first to know about the next slate of plays.
The comedy follows a 24-foot-tall Big Friendly Giant and Sophie, a 10-year-old girl who befriends him. Unlike his less-friendly neighbors, the giant doesn't eat people, so he and Sophie embark on a mission to save the people of England from the incoming predators.
Parents may feel nostalgic about this story, which came out as a book in 1982, and has since been made into a live action movie in 2016. As any small human would hope, this larger-than-life stage production is quite the spectacle. It'll include shadow puppets and overhead projection art (plus some 80s clothes) to set the scene.
“Adapting The BFG for the stage required a blend of creativity and innovation," said director Anthony Runfola, who also serves as Magik's artistic director, in a press release. "We approached the task by considering the importance of scale—how to make the fantastical world of giants and humans come alive in a theatrical setting. Scenery, props, and costumes all intersect in a way that is much more intricate than in most productions.”
Over its past 30 years, Magik Theatre has drawn in 44,000 patrons annually and staged nearly 300 productions, including many that were adapted from nostalgic children's books. Celebrating these achievements at the birthday bash will be "community giants" Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havdra, and other representatives from HEB and Hemisfair.
Learning about the next season first isn't the only draw: Attendees will also enjoy "sweet treats" like cupcakes, games, and circus-style entertainment. Kids can stand next to life-sized cutout of Spurs giant Victor Wembanyama, who measures in at seven feet and three-and-a-half inches.
Patrons can look back at an exhibit of Magick's greatest moments, and kids can look to the future by making BFG-themed dream jars out of folded paper, for dropping in written hopes and goals. A champagne and cupcake toast tops off the night.
