San Antonio program offers playwrights a path from page to stage

The Teatro Salón Table Reading Series lets playwrights receive feedback from audiences and fellow theater artists.
San Antonio playwrights with unproduced scripts now have a new opportunity to see their work come to life. The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) is accepting submissions for its third Teatro Salón Table Reading Series, an annual program designed to help both new and emerging writers develop staged works through public workshops.
From the submissions, GCAC will select two to three scripts for table readings scheduled for August or September 2026. The readings will give playwrights a rare chance to hear their work performed by actors and receive feedback from audiences and fellow theater artists.
The Teatro Salón is open to playwrights across Texas, regardless of experience level. According to GCAC Theater Arts Director Jorge Piña, the program is especially focused on supporting voices that have historically been underrepresented on stage.
“We encourage anyone to submit, even if you’ve never written a play,” Piña said in a release. “We want to support underrepresented playwrights, including women, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, disabled, neurodiverse, etc., and encourage you to submit.”
Scripts must reflect the Latinx, Chicana/o, or Tejano experience, though GCAC welcomes a wide range of genres, including drama, comedy, satire, and even children’s plays. Works that incorporate themes related to Día de los Muertos or the Christmas holiday season are also encouraged.
The program has already served as a pipeline to the stage. Previous Teatro Salón readings have led to full productions of La Niña Girasol by J. Cesar Duenas in June 2022 and Las Comadres de Morales Street by Irene Chavez in March 2025.
Aspiring dramatists should check the submission guidelines carefully. Scripts must be unproduced, run between 60 and 90 minutes, and be written in English, Spanish, or bilingually. One submission per playwright is allowed. One-acts, screenplays, and short stories will not be considered.
Playwrights must also submit the script along with a cover letter that includes the title, a short bio, contact information, a brief synopsis, and character descriptions. Submissions can be mailed to Jorge Piña at 723 S. Brazos St, San Antonio, TX. 78207 or emailed to jorgep@guadalupeculturalarts.org. Phone calls will not be accepted. The submission deadline is March 31, 2026, at 4 pm.
