Artsy San Antonio bookstore to close after less than a year
Embarrassing Shoes will call it a day in late January.
One of Alamo City’s most visionary booksellers has reached its final chapter. Embarrassing Shoes, the quirky art-focused book shop inside San Antonio Gold, will close in late January 2026 after less than a year in business.
"Well... it just didn't work out, bad business idea,” wrote founders Emiko Badillo and Chad Miller in an Instagram statement. “We are gonna be slowly going out of business and trying to clear out inventory in the least painful way possible. Any pity purchases you can throw our way would be most appreciated.”
Badillo, a visual artist, and Miller, a photographer, opened the tiny boutique bookshop at 1913 S Flores St in February with a hyper-focus on photobooks, art prints, zines, greeting cards, and candy. The store did double duty as gallery space for local talent, frequently hosting shows during Southtown’s Second Saturday art crawls. From the start, it had a proletariat mission.
“This is our attempt to stay creative and frisky, meet some folks, support some folks, and make ends meet,” the duo explained in the website’s “About Us” section. “Hopefully, there are things on here you like, and they are in your budget. If you really love something, but can't swing it financially, feel free to reach out, and maybe we can figure something out. Seriously, arty stuff shouldn't be reserved for rich folks. Nice things make things... nicer in a rough world. We think so anyway.”
Embarrassing Shoes’ impending closure comes at a crossroads for the independent book market. Although some San Antonio shops, like The Twig Book Shop in Pearl and Nowhere Bookshop in Alamo Heights, seem to be thriving, other ventures have been short-lived. San Antone Books in Monte Vista shuttered five months after its March debut.
That’s not keeping other bookworms from giving the business a go. Pages for Ages (10350 Bandera Rd, #300) and Book Nerd (2211 NW Military Hwy. #118) recently entered the San Antonio indie scene, albeit with less niche focuses than Embarrassing Shoes.
Despite the business' end, Embarrassing Shoes is taking its licks with characteristic good humor and offering discounts on its remaining stock. Currently, all merchandise is discounted 20 percent in-shop or online using the cheeky code RIP20. Padillo and Miller promise deeper markdowns as the store enters its final days.
