The "People’s Homes: project is a collaborative effort that celebrates the lives and experiences of longtime residents, while also examining expanded ideas of home. The project aims to bridge the often-indistinguishable line between the personal and political, using creative practices to humanize, visualize, and reflect on the complex issues of gentrification, aging, and isolation.

The project began in 2015 in Portland, Oregon, where five local artists were paired with five senior citizens. Each artist created a small-scale billboard honoring the seniors’ life stories, which were installed in the residents’ front yards. A new iteration of the project is being realized in San Antonio by artists Emily Fitzgerald and Molly Sherman. The project focuses on intergenerational connections, equity, housing, and aging in the community.

To gather stories for the project in San Antonio, a representative from five local cultural organizations has been invited to interview an intergenerational pair or group of residents. These stories will be brought together through a publication and exhibition featuring elements representing each intergenerational relationship, in conversation with the project participants and at the residents' homes.

The project is funded in part by a Texas State University Research Enhancement Grant and builds on past People’s Homes projects dedicated to telling the stories of longtime residents’ experiences with resilience, aging, and place.

Following the opening day, the exhibit will be on view through June 4.
