Staged as a play within a play, Alice Childress’ Trouble in Mind, played to sold out audiences off Broadway and was destined to be the first black female play on Broadway in 1955. To make the leap to Broadway the playwright was told to rewrite the story with a happier ending. After several attempts Childress, dissatisfied with the changes, withdrew the script from consideration for a Broadway run and restored her original ending.
The brilliantly written story follows actors on a journey that navigates the rocky road of bigotry and subtle acts of racism, as they practice their craft. A telling story that will resonate with every audience member, Trouble in Mind investigates serious topics with poignant comic relief.
This special production is being presented to commemorate the 125th anniversary of St. Philip’s College, the oldest HBCU in Texas. Produced and directed by Vincent Hardy, Trouble in Mind features a wealth of San Antonio acting royalty, including Cassandra Small, Jessica "Jess Mahogany" Mitchell, Byrd Bonner, and Cary Farrow IV.
