McNay Art Museum presents "Two Faced: An Exhibition of Artists’ Portraits, in Two Parts"

eventdetail
Paul Gauguin, "Portrait of the Artist with the Idol," ca. 1893, Oil on canvas. Bequest of Marion Koogler McNay, 1950.46

"Two Faced: An Exhibition of Artists’ Portraits, in Two Parts" is a two-part exhibition that offers a deep dive into the McNay’s permanent collection by highlighting different ways artists have depicted themselves and each other since 1799.

The installation features printed, drawn, painted, and sculptural portraits and self-portraits representing 50 visual and performing artists. Midway through the run of the exhibition, the works on paper will change out and introduce a new set of themes and ways of thinking about portraiture. The installations will include work by artists including Henri Matisse, Diane Gamboa, Paul Gauguin, Kathe Kollwitz, Cecilia Paredes, Diego Rivera, Francisco Toledo, Vincent Valdez, and Carrie Mae Weems.

The first iteration, which is on view from September 3-November 29, 2026, offers examples of double portraits, distorted likenesses, and images making references to other artists. The second part, open from December 17, 2026 to March 14, 2027, presents representations of the artist at work, portraits with pets, and images where familiar objects stand in for the body of the artist.
