Free San Antonio Fun
6 totally free fun things to do in San Antonio this summer
Whether you’re new to San Antonio or your family has lived here for generations, there are always fresh opportunities to explore your city. We've rounded up some of the best events to enjoy throughout the summer — and they're all free.
Stargazing in San Antonio
The San Antonio League of Sidewalk Astronomers (SALSA) offers free stargazing to the public every Wednesday evening at sunset at McAllister Park. Stargazers can bring their own telescopes or view the night sky through one of the many telescopes located on the field. Keep track of when the sun sets to head to the park and see the stars.
Disc Golf
Hole in basket one! If you’re interested in participating in the fun of disc golf, where players use a flying disc and try to toss it into pole baskets, you’re in luck: The City of San Antonio offers free admission to three golf courses at Falcone, McClain, and Pearsall park. Park hours are from 5 am to 11 pm, offering a break from the heat later in the day. Be sure to bring your own discs to play.
Environmental Film Festival
Everyone knows San Antonio is a famous river city, and to help commemorate National Rivers Month this June, the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) will host the third annual Environmental Film Fest from 6 to 10 pm on June 9 at Santikos Northwest 14 theaters. SARA, in partnership with the South Yuba River Citizens League, will feature national and international short films on topics including nature, adventure, wildlife, environmental justice, and conservation. The festival will also debut SARA’s inaugural Watershed Wise Awards ceremony. The event is free but seating is limited to the first 250 attendees.
Yoga at the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Have you been wanting to try yoga outdoors? How about in a national park? The National Parks Service is partnering with Mobile Om and Los Compadres de San Antonio Missions to host a series of free yoga sessions at the historic site this summer. Bring your yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes to practice from 7 to 8 am every fourth Tuesday of each month from now until August 23. The next session is held June 28 at Mission Concepción and July 26 at Mission San Juan.
Cycling to the Cinema
If you love the idea of watching a drive-in movie in a different way, pedal downtown on your bike every Thursday beginning this month to enjoy Cycle-In Cinema at Main Plaza. Hosted by Main Plaza Conservancy and SATX Pedal Power, the outing is a great chance to pump up your heart rate and recharge with a cold beer, snow cone, or funnel cake upon arrival. Movies begin at dusk (around 8:45 pm) with the upcoming summer schedule to be posted soon.
H-E-B Free Tuesdays at SAMA
The San Antonio Museum of Art is the place to be on Tuesday nights. Take advantage of free public parking downtown, as well as free admission to the museum from 4 to 9 pm. Attend a free gallery talk featuring museum highlights from 4:30 to 5:30 pm or a free talk from 5:30 to 6:30 pm about artist Auguste Rodin.
SAMA has also combined art and exercise for Art Fit from 6 to 8 pm each Tuesday in the sculpture garden. Enjoy a quick gallery talk on fitness in the visual arts, and then engage in kettlebell exercises and a run down the river led by professional coaches from Run Wild Sports.
