Building Community

These new San Antonio homes bring smart design to the best neighborhoods

CultureMap Create
May 25, 2017 | 12:00 pm

In order to enjoy everything an exciting urban area has to offer — art galleries, museums, eclectic cafes, bustling bars and restaurants — there used to be a trade-off when it came to your living situation.

Not so with PSW Real Estate, which builds smartly designed and energy efficient homes in dynamic, urban areas. In San Antonio, that means desirable neighborhoods such as Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, and Southtown — otherwise known as exactly where everyone is clamoring to live.

To be located in these storied and beautiful areas is one thing, but to live there while enjoying a home that features solar panels, open floorplans, sleek finishes, and heaps of style is quite another. No matter which community you choose, each PSW home is built to the highest standard and with modern, comfortable living in mind.

The 10 single-family homes at Terrell Road, for example, are a combination of traditional materials and intelligent details. Wood accents provide texture against the limestone ground-floor walls, while stained concrete floors inside juxtapose against the quartz countertops and timeless tile backsplashes. The boundary between indoor and outdoor living is intentionally blurred, with an abundance of natural light flooding each room.

As for location, it doesn't get much better than this. The Broadway Corridor is just down the street, opening up to dozens of big-name and locally owned restaurants and amenities, including a Central Market that's within walking distance. A quick drive brings you to the famous River Walk, the historic Pearl district, and all of San Antonio's world-class museums.

PSW homes and townhomes also come with an intangible bonus: a real sense of community. Each PSW development is carefully constructed to maximize social interaction (think shared outdoor courtyards). The company even organizes fun events for its residents throughout the year, encouraging friendship and the reassuring safety that comes from knowing your neighbors.

Eager to take a peek at one of these incredible communities? Stop by 354 E. Olmos Dr. on May 27 from 2-4 pm to learn more about PSW's San Antonio developments, and tour one of the homes for yourself.

In total, Sea World will feature 12 uniquely themed holiday areas for this 42-day Yuletide extravaganza.

In Texas, we like to claim that everything is bigger here. We also like to compete for biggest of the big, which rings true for Sea World's self-ascribed "biggest Christmas event in Texas," kicking off this week.

Starting Thursday, November 10, the marine life park transforms into a holiday wonderland for 42 full days of sparkling lights, holiday festivities, and, of course, tasty seasonal treats. This year also marks the premiere of a new live-action musical, O Wondrous Night, as well as a new Christmas party zone, Snowman Jam. In the former, the Nativity story comes to life through the eyes of the animals who experienced it, thanks to puppetry, carols, and special effects. Meanwhile, Snowman Jam invites park visitors to enjoy festive flurries and specialty cocktails from the Frozen Fusion Bar while bopping to the sounds of a DJ.

Returning favorites include the Sesame Street Christmas Parade, Christmas Market, meet-and-greets with Santa and Rudolph, and the "largest light display in the state" – according to the release. In total, the park will feature 12 uniquely themed holiday areas, from a 1950s-inspired Christmas cove; a whimsical Snowman village with life-sized snowman; and the country-themed Christmas Market, which houses a Christmas tree made entirely of cowboy boots.

Other highlights include:

  • Holiday shows and festive animal presentations, from Merry Mariachis to a festive beluga whale and pacific white-sided dolphin presentation.
  • An immersive Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer experience: Hear the story of the world's most famous reindeer when strolling past life-size story book vignettes featuring the classic tale before meeting the beloved characters including Rudolph himself.
  • The Sesame Street Christmas Parade: Festive floats feature live performances and celebrate the magic of the holiday season with Sesame Street friends, including Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and more.
  • Coca-Cola presents Fireside S’mores and a holiday scavenger hunt: Families and friends can create memories while cozied up around the fire roasting marshmallows for delicious holiday s'mores. Afterwards, guests can participate in a photo scavenger hunt for Coca-Cola-themed festive prize and the chance to be featured on billboards around San Antonio.
Don't forget the festive food and drinks, either: The park will offer no lack of seasonal candies, baked goods, hot cocoa, and more. Winter cocktails include a new Santa-Gria and melon liqueur-based Grinch cocktail. For a traditional holiday meal, guests can enjoy dinner with Santa or Rudolph (reservations required).

SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration runs from 1 pm until 9 pm on select days between November 10 and January 2, 2023. Head to SeaWorld.com to plan your visit or learn more about 2023 Season Passes, which includes free Christmas ornaments, a free ticket for a friend to join in the Christmas festivities, and more benefits.

San Antonio's Welcome Walk & Festival returns to celebrate immigrant and refugee families

Mayor Ron Nirenberg will join the free, family-friendly celebration.

Returning for the second year, a special event this weekend will celebrate the journey and cultural heritage of immigrants and refugees who have made their home in the San Antonio area. Hosted by the City of San Antonio and local nonprofit Culturingua, the Welcome Walk & Festival takes place at the Rosemont at Denman Estate Park from 10 am to 2pm on Saturday, November 12.

On its website, Culturingua shares its mission to "cultivate, promote, and preserve Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian (MENASA) cultural, linguistic, and artistic heritage to invest in human, community, and economic development." Since 2018, the group's innovative programming has focused on building bridges to foster human development and civic engagement in order to serve the Bexar County community.

According to the Welcome Walk & Festival event page, over 250 members participated in the 2021 event. The celebration was such a success that city leaders encouraged Culturingua to make it an annual occurrence.

"As the need for refugee resettlement has grown, San Antonio has taken the lead to become a welcoming ground, and ultimately home, for many refugees and immigrants seeking a new life in the U.S," the event description reads. "San Antonio Welcome Walk & Festival is an event that was created to embrace these new faces in the community."

Saturday's celebration will kick off with a one-mile walk with San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, symbolizing the journey of immigrants and refugees to the United States. Nirenberg will also deliver remarks during the event, along with other local leaders.

“For more than 300 years, San Antonio has been a city of immigrants and refugees,” says Nirenberg in a release. “When we talk about San Antonio to the world, they know it is through our diversity that we find strength, and through the embrace of our diversity that we find unity.”

Nirenberg added, “I cannot think of a better to express who we are as a community, here in San Antonio, than to start with a welcome walk in which everyone is welcome to join us.”

The free, family-friendly event will feature food vendors, children's activities, an immigrant-owned small business market, and more, including:

  • The launch of Nourish to Flourish Mobile Commercial Kitchen, a culinary training facility that empowers immigrants and refugees with guidance, skills, and mentorship when entering or expanding into the culinary industry.
  • The kickoff of San Antonio for Global Entrepreneurship Week, an international celebration of entrepreneurs in every country and community around the world.
  • The San Antonio launch of Kiva, an internationally renowned, global microlending platform that expands access to capital for entrepreneurs with zero-percent interest character-based loans. Three locally- and immigrant-owned restaurant owners will present their Kiva loan request to the community.

For more information and to register (for free) in advance, visit the event’s website.
