San Antonio Airport clears new high-flying mascot for takeoff

Jett's wings might make hugging a little awkward,
Move over, Coyote; step aside, Ballapeño. San Antonio has a new mascot, and he has frequent flyer miles. On February 24, the San Antonio International Airport (SAT) debuted Jett, the travel hub’s new hype man.
Although the sight of an anthropological airplane with legs and landing gear sneakers might seem like a strange sight, it is a growing phenomenon. Japanese airports have employed mascots for years, and a growing number of U.S. airports have launched their own characters, such as Gordo at Fresno Yosemite, Jett the SEA Otter at Seattle–Tacoma, and Amelia the Airplane at Phoenix Sky Harbor.
Obviously, the airports get a brand boost from the plush ambassadors, but they also serve a more human-centric purpose. The friendly characters offer reassurance to passengers who are wary of air travel, especially children, emphasizing the adventure ahead.
SAT says Jett is a particularly intrepid traveler, prone to “stunt flying and aerial sightseeing.” We’d like to think he borrowed his second “t” from rock legend Joan Jett, but a press release did not explore his Spotify Wrapped playlist.
“Jett is high-energy, fun, has some dance moves, and is already getting hugs from travelers,” says Tonya Hope, San Antonio Aviation’s Public Relations Manager, in a release. “He’s the perfect brand ambassador, and he’s here to elevate the traveler’s experience at San Antonio International Airport and Stinson Municipal Airport. Jett isn’t shy and loves selfies.”
Besides wandering SAT, Jett also plans to be a man about town. The San Antonio celebutante is available for bookings by emailing chynnon.albeck@sanantonio.gov with an event date, duration, and a brief description.
