San Antonio 'vampire bar' vanishes off St. Mary's Strip
Cream II has done dark on the St. Mary's Strip.
A favorite haunt for San Antonio’s goth community has quietly slunk into the night. Cream II, the self-proclaimed “vampire bar” at 2806 N St. Mary's St. is now closed, according to a former employee.
The story of the bar, located in the former home of Squeezebox on the St. Mary’s Strip, is a tangled web. Cream first debuted at 527 W. Hildebrand Ave. in Beacon Hill in July 2022. Originally, it was a more conventional dance club, with signs that read “Prada Marfa” and “Blessed.” Over time, the bats took over the belfry, and the concept became known for its darker vibes.
By 2023, the owners were ready to expand. They announced ambitious plans to convert a historic building at 102 Heiman St. in St. Paul Square into a new Cream nightclub. The space would feature two levels of dancefloors — one playing death rock and post-punk, and the other house and techno — plus a rentable upstairs rooftop. That vision dissolved in 2024.
“This could’ve been special, but we got screwed,” an Instagram post said at the time. “Lesson[s] were learned, and this is an example of doing your homework on a property.”
Despite the setback, the owners pivoted again. On Labor Day weekend 2024, they debuted “y’allternative” space Neon Moon Saloon. Like the original Cream, that bar quickly switched courses, too, trading country for nu-metal and emo despite the cowhides on the wall.
The foray into yeehaw vibes proved to be short-lived, however. After barely two months, the owners rebranded the spot into Cream II, which attracted more Doc Martens than Ropers.
Cream has not made any public statements about the closure, but has been on the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission’s delinquent list — a public list of retailers who haven't paid alcohol wholesalers by the state's credit payment deadline — for several weeks. A social media request for more information was not immediately returned, and the phone number for the business appears to be disconnected.
The same ownership group also closed Libros Book Club, a spooky reading room and lounge on Hildebrand Avenue, in August 2025.
