END OF AN ERA
Classic Cajun cafe says au revoir to San Antonio after 38 years
Since 1986, Acadiana Cafe has been giving San Antonio lagniappe as one of few spots for traditional Cajun cuisine. Now the longstanding restaurant is throwing in the towel.
In a statement, posted via Facebook, the eatery explained that owner Dave Saylor had sold the property to the Hacienda Vallarta Restaurant Group. Although the incoming concept will be a Mexican buffet and bakery, the sale came with Acadiana’s recipes.
Acadiana served the city’s West Side at 1289 SW Loop 410 for almost 38 years, making few changes to its atmosphere, facade, or menu. One of Alamo City’s most affordable restaurants, the joint specialized in Southern and Cajun comfort fare, especially seafood like catfish, shrimp, and crawfish.
Although the statement did not delve into the reasons for the sale, there’s no doubt that San Antonio’s restaurant scene has become tougher in the decades since Acadiana opened. Competition has ramped up, especially from national chains, and the industry has not completely reset since the Covid-19 pandemic.
In January, the restaurant also suffered the theft of its food truck. A community tip helped quickly recover the trailer, which the business celebrated by giving out free gumbo to the community.
Acadiana will continue to operate from 11 am to 9 pm until the transition is finished. According to the post, the last day of business is August 29.
