SUMMER BUMMER
Beloved San Antonio-area amusement park takes last ride after 18 years

ZDT's Amusement Park is riding off into the sunset.
For a generation of families who spent summers riding roller coasters at Seguin’s ZDT’s Amusement Park, the back-to-school season will start on a bittersweet note. The owners have announced the venue will wrap up operations after the 2025 season ends on August 17.
“We are so honored to have provided smiles, thrills, and happy memories for 18-plus years!” said the park in a Facebook post. “We sincerely appreciate all your support over the years. It has been really fun and heart-warming being a part of your story! We hope you will come out for one last visit!”
Sarah and Danny Donhauser opened the theme park in 2007, naming their new venture after their three children — Zac, Danielle, and Tiffany. Quickly, ZDT’s began adding more attractions, welcoming a go-cart course after the first year, then five new attractions in 2009. By 2010, the Donhausers were operating their first water ride, the Mad Raft Water Coaster.
It gave other area amusement parks a run for their money with the addition of the Switchback, a first-of-its-kind wooden shuttle ride that paid homage to America’s first roller coaster.
According to amusement industry news site Theme Park Tribune, the signature coaster provided the first clue that the Donhausers were soon to sell the park. Manufacturer Gravity Group brought it to market at the fall 2024 International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Expo.
The social media accounts also provided some hints. Several posts traded usual promotions for a sense of wistful nostalgia.
"We are so thankful to everyone who has visited or spread the word about ZDT's over the past 17 and a half years," the park posted in November 2024.
Although ZDT’s statements did not give a reason for the shutter, the Donhausers were more candid with local newspaper The Seguin Gazette, citing low attendance, rising costs, and a desire to spend more time with their children and grandchildren.
“It has become very clear that the park is no longer sustainable,” Sarah told the publication. “We had to make that difficult decision to close at the end of the summer.”
Before ZDT’s closes for good, the park is advising anyone holding gift cards or any-day tickets to redeem them before August 17. Current season members will be notified of next steps via email.
