San Antonio in the Movies
San Antonio Film Festival kicks off its 30th year of screenings and more
There's always much to see in San Antonio, and this week there's exponentially more at the San Antonio Film Festival. From July 30 to August 4, the festival will highlight more than 200 films, creatives, and special events like red carpets and industry panels. This is the festival's 30th anniversary.
The festival will take place across three venues: festival headquarters and a filmmaker lounge are at the Radius Center (106 Auditorium Circle), and screenings will take place at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts (100 Auditorium Circle) and City Base Cinema (2623 SE Military Dr.).
“It’s a milestone,” said executive director and founder Adam Rocha in a press release. “What started out as an underground movie night, offering local films in a pay-what-you-can at the door policy, has turned into a six-day celebration... We are extremely proud of this organization and what we’ve achieved for San Antonio, South Texas and the entire film community.”
It's not too late for San Antonians who don't have a festival badge. Single-day passes are available for each day ($59.99), and for escapists with full-time jobs, there's a weekend pass ($99.99) covering August 3 and 4.
With dozens of films to choose from, here are a few that sound especially interesting:

- Hot issues: On Thursday at 9:30 pm, the narrative film Ballad of a Hustler tackles issues around reintegration after being incarcerated and the perils of New York City's underbelly for undocumented immigrants.
- Youthful fun: On Friday at 7 pm, Teenage Vampire 3 follows a few teens' plot to expose a vampire who they think is trying to take over the school.
- Familiar face: On Saturday at 7 pm, Danny Trejo stars in American Underdog with Vishy Ayyar and Veronica Falcón in a MMA (mixed martial arts) redemption story.
- Inspiring: On Sunday at 12:30 pm, the documentary Rhino Man highlights the grueling work of field rangers in South Africa who risk their lives to protect Rhinos from poachers.
