CANCER'S A DRAG
San Antonio drag queen Kristi Waters pauses shows amid cancer fight

Kristi Waters is taking a hiatus to undergo cancer treatment.
One of San Antonio’s most beloved drag performers, Kristi Waters, is taking a break from performing following a cancer diagnosis. The sought-after entertainer announced the hiatus via a heartfelt note posted on Instagram.
“This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to share, but I want to be honest with my community who’s shown me nothing but love and support over the years,” Waters wrote. “I’ve recently been diagnosed with stage three cancer, and because of that, I’ll be stepping away from performing for some time to focus on my treatment and my recovery.”
Waters is arguably San Antonio’s most well-known drag host. The former Corpus Christi school teacher is a fixture of Alamo City’s LGBTQ-plus community, hosting a weekly brunch at Let’s Be Honest and lending her talents to a variety of fundraisers each year.
In 2022, she was selected as the grand marshal of the first-ever Pride River Parade and Celebration. In 2024, she was named Countess of the River Walk in recognition of her work raising funds for local hospitality and architectural preservation scholarships.
Waters' Instagram post was met with an outpouring of support from local fans, Texas drag and burlesque performers, and RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni like Kimora Blac and Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté.
A GoFundMe campaign in Waters’ name has been established to help her with treatment costs. Local fans can also extend well wishes (and tip heavily) during the several appearances Waters has booked during San Antonio Pride Week.
Waters did not give a timeline for her return to the stage but says she will continue working until her chemo and radiation start. The tireless performer is planning a going-away show before undergoing treatment. Details will be announced through social media.
“I’m determined to fight with everything I’ve got and come back stronger, healthier, and more grateful than ever to do what I love,” Waters shared.
