'Tis the season
5 can't-miss San Antonio events to celebrate the spectacular holiday season
The holiday season is upon us and the cool weather has just set in. If you haven’t already, it’s time to pull out your cozy coats and get out of the house. Here are five outings we’re looking forward to this winter.
Ford Fiesta de Las Luminarias
In honor of the Mexican Christmas tradition of decorating with paper lanterns known as luminarias, the River Walk is glowing with 2,000 lights this month. If you haven’t already, be sure to visit Friday through Saturday at dusk December 8-10 or 15-17 as the lights overhead set the festive mood and beautiful luminarias guide the walkway.
Jazz, TX
If you’re a jazz enthusiast (or simply like holiday music) the Big Band Christmas Show with Doc Watkins and his Orchestra is not to be missed. The festive performance is going on now through December 23. For tickets and more information, click here.
Menorah Lighting
On December 18, the Pearl will celebrate the festival of lights during its third annual menorah lighting event hosted by Young & Jewish San Antonio. The Chanukah celebration will be from 6-9:30 pm under the shade structure (next to the CIA outdoor kitchen) with festive fare and music.
The Nutcracker
Nothing gets us ready for the holidays like the Nutcracker ballet. Now through December 27, this enchanting Christmas tradition will be performing in various venues throughout the city including the Jo Long Theater and the Lila Cockrell Theatre. The Moscow Ballet will be performing "The Great Russian Nutcracker" December 26 and 27 at the Majestic Theater.
The Pearl Holiday Night Market
Visit the Pearl Brewery on Thursday December 7, December 14 and 20 for an evening of holiday shopping. In addition to perusing the artisanal goods, there’s enough music and tasty treats to make it a date night. The night market is open from 4-8 pm.
